The Gutenberg Graduate School of the Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHS) is a central institution of the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) dedicated to the encouragement and support of prospective and current doctoral candidates in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including Law and Economics.
We as a graduate school want to ensure that your doctorate in the humanities and social sciences is a success. We offer a wide range of services to provide you with the best possible support, not only throughout the doctoral studies programme, but after completion of your doctorate too!
The general conditions applying to doctorates in the humanities and social sciences generally differ from those in the natural and life sciences. We therefore supplement what is on offer generally at JGU for researchers in the early stages of their careers with formats that are specifically geared towards your personal doctoral experience and needs.
A successful doctorate in the humanities and social sciences opens up access to many stimulating and challenging activities in academia, business and society. However, in addition to the professional qualifications and academic curiosity acquired through the programme of study, a high degree of self-organization and personal responsibility is also necessary.
For us as a graduate school, strengthening and supporting you in the best possible way in the exercise of this self-responsibility is crucially important. The GSHS advisory and qualification concept therefore goes beyond a purely instrumental understanding of academic abilities and key skills. Our programme supports the academic educational processes associated with the doctorate, stimulates methodological reflection and contributes to broadening your horizons. With us, you will have many opportunities to look beyond your own doctoral thesis and acquire additional qualifications for your future whether within or outside academia.
Diversity is particularly important to us – diversity of subjects, methodological approaches, people, genders and backgrounds. In addition to what we can offer early-career researchers, we are also committed to working with supervisors and our partner institutions to create the right conditions for doctorates in the humanities and social sciences at JGU. In addition, the GSHS advises and supports research networks in the humanities and social sciences in applying for and implementing structured measures for the fostering of young researchers.
The Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) is one of the most diverse universities in Germany and offers a particularly broad spectrum of research-intensive disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
