Your acceptance as a doctoral candidate<\/a><\/strong> by the relevant faculty\/school\/academy – and thus registration as a doctoral candidate – is not limited in time. Therefore, the candidate is under no obligation to notify the relevant dean’s office\/rectorate of any periods of interruption, e.g. due to illness, parental leave, employment. If you would nevertheless like to report such an interruption, you should contact the relevant doctoral office<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enrolment as a doctoral student<\/a><\/strong> can be terminated by exmatriculation.<\/strong><\/a> As enrolment is not mandatory for doctoral candidate, exmatriculation has no effect on the doctoral degree assessment procedure. However, the GSHS recommends – despite the additional cost for the semester fee – that you remain enrolled for the entire duration of the doctorate, as this has many advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enrolment as a doctoral student is also not limited in time. The previous 6-year time limit has been abolished. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you have been exmatriculated, you will need to submit a new application should you decide to re-enrol as a doctoral student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are receiving a scholarship from JGU (e.g. a GSHS research proposal scholarship), you must act in accordance with regulations laid out in the JGU Scholarship Guidelines<\/strong><\/a> (in German) if you wish to interrupt your doctoral studies programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are certain that you wish to discontinue your doctorate, you can report the discontinuation to the relevant dean’s Office\/rectorate. No justification is required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are a GSHS member, please<\/strong> also report the discontinuation of your doctorate to the GSHS office<\/a><\/strong>. A short email will suffice. Your GSHS membership will then be terminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are accepted as a doctoral candidate at another university\/higher education institution, your registration at JGU will be cancelled (exceptions: bi-national doctorate\/cotutelle procedure<\/strong><\/a> and cooperative doctorates<\/a><\/strong> with universities of applied sciences). If you are still involved in teaching and research at JGU (e.g. through a second supervision), you can apply for a GSHS guest membership.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
