The rise of nationalism transformed conceptions about the link between “national” communities, languages, and geographic areas – a process also accompanied by the emergence of new “emotional communities”, norms regarding “legitimate” emotions, and their conceptualization. In my project, I will investigate alternative conceptions of geographical and spatial categories and interrelated collective identities in late Ottoman academic and public discourse, especially at the Department of Arts of the Dârülfünun, expressed e.g. in emerging notions as “world literature”. Focusing on the particular emotions imbuing these discourses, I will contribute to the history of knowledge and intellectual history with the history of emotions as an analytical lens. |
