Would you like to work with other GSHS members on interdisciplinary topics relevant to your doctorate and have not yet found what you are looking for in our existing research groups? Then set up your own GSHS research group.

Thematic focuses for research groups can include:

  • Cross-cutting research topics (e.g. gender studies)
  • Research methods and approaches (e.g. qualitative social research, data mining, narrative theory, etc.)
  • Networking of doctoral candidates in particular circumstances (e.g. international doctoral candidates, doctoral candidates with care responsibilities, etc.)
  • Interdisciplinary reading groups with a specific thematic or theoretical focus
  • Mutual support with academic writing, preparation of presentations, conferences and disputations, etc.

A research group must consist of at least four GSHS members (junior/full/guest members).

The members of the research group must belong to at least two different (doctoral) subjects .

The involvement of persons who are not members of the GSHS is possible, but should be justified (e.g. interdisciplinary research groups with natural scientists). JGU postdocs can become involved in research groups at any time.

Research groups can appoint a mentor from JGU who will assist and advise them in academic questions. This person can be a postdoctoral researcher or – in the case of non-specialist working groups – another JGU employee with relevant academic/research/research management qualifications.

Two members of the working group are to be named to the GSHS office as contact persons. They are responsible for the organizational management of the research group. The office advises and supports the research groups on organisational matters and in the event of difficulties. For face-to-face meetings, it can assist in arranging rooms where necessary.
Persons can be members or mentors in several research groups. However, one person cannot be the contact person for several research groups.

The research group are approved for a period of two years. After that, an application for extension can be submitted.

Research groups must meet at least twice per semester, either virtually or in person.

A certificate of attendance can be issued to a group member upon leaving the research group or if required.

Submit an application to set up a research group: simply fill out the application form, have it signed by all reasearch group members (electronic signature is sufficient) and submit it electronically to the office.

Do you have an idea for a research group and would like to find others to join you? The GSHS office will be happy to help.
