In Rhineland-Palatinate (in contrast to some other federal states), the right to award doctorates currently lies exclusively with the universities. A doctorate at a university of applied sciences is possible in cooperation with a university (cooperative doctorate in accordance with ยง34 para. 7 of the Rhineland-Palatinate Higher Education Act HochSchG (in German)).
The doctoral procedure is formally handled by the university concerned. For cooperative doctorates with the JGU, the respective doctoral degree regulations (possible doctoral subjects, requirements for acceptance as a doctoral candidate, authorised examiners in doctoral procedures, etc. (in German)) apply.
For the Application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate at the respective department (or faculty/academy of arts) of JGU, a confirmation of supervision by a person authorised to supervise at JGU is required (Information on identifying and contacting potential supervisors). In addition, in the case of cooperative doctoral procedures, at least one university lecturer from the respective university of applied sciences should be involved in the supervision and examination.
Prospective doctoral candidates in the humanities and social sciences who would like to do a cooperative doctorate at JGU can take advantage of an initial consultation for doctoral candidates (Arrange an appointment).
