There are no tuition fees for doctorates at JGU. There is a one-time administrative fee (Promotionsgebühr in German) of currently approx. €170, which must be paid to the faculty/rectorate before submitting your doctoral thesis. In addition, fees for the recognition of foreign educational qualifications may apply.

Enrolment as a doctoral student is not compulsory, but is recommended by the GSHS. A re-registration fee must be paid for enrolment each semester. The portion attributable to the semester ticket may be refunded under certain circumstances.

  • Travel and accommodation costs for trips to the place of study
  • Stays abroad (accident/health insurance, vaccinations, etc.)
  • Membership fees (e.g. academic societies, trade unions)
  • Childcare or dependents care
  • Accessibility measures (e.g. accompanying person, assistants, sign language interpretation, aids)
  • Publication of the doctoral thesis (or the papers in the case of a cumulative doctorate) and other publications, open access fees
